LightMedia develop new digital tablet technology for Transport Museum

04 October 2015

Coventry Transport Museum’s summer exhibition Pedals to Medals has been an amazing hit, an extraordinary new exhibition that celebrates the history and heroes of all kinds of competitive cycling. Record numbers have flocked to visit the exhibition since its opening back in June, which in the wake of Bradley Wiggins winning the Tour de France and Team GB’s Olympic cycling triumphs, has really captured the spirit of the Summer.

And for the final few weeks of the exhibition, an exciting new dimension has been added.  As well as exploring the cycles and memorabilia items themselves, visitors can now use an interactive tablet to view specially commissioned films and galleries of photographs detailing the story of competitive cycling.  The system developed by LightMedia Digital is being trialled in the Pedals to Medals exhibition before being used in the Museum’s forthcoming Autumn/Winter exhibition – Scootermania, which opens on Friday 26th October.

Craig Joy - IT Manager at Coventry Transport Museum said:

"We often have lots of display material to use in our temporary galleries, so once digitised I wanted to share these items with our visitors.  Tablet technology offers this solution as without taking up large amounts of space and being easy to use for the visitor.  This brings an extra angle to interpretation and enables more engagement for our visitors through this digital medium.

I worked with developing the software for the tablet devices alongside a project for mobile based software with Light Media. They were able to provide well designed interfaces along with custom coded front and back end systems to allow me to share the archive material. We now plan to roll out this technology throughout the Museum."
